We are starting what will likely be the biggest project of the year. We are digging out the entire foundation of our off grid home! When we initially set out to build our own home, we bought everything at once to get our house from raw land to under roof... with cash. It was a big investment and we had tough choices to make on the design. One of the ways in which we were able to cut costs initially was by going with concrete columns for the foundation. We saved thousands and were able to get a rock solid foundation for the house. However, going that route meant that we would end up "here" one day.... needing to close in the bottom of the house. Rather than going with steel and concrete board attached to the columns, we decided the best route was to dig in between each column and pour a new footer. By doing this we are adding even more structural significance to the home and also giving ourselves a solid base to attach the stone to.

We are a couple who are building our own home from the ground up in the mountains of West Virginia. After living near the city our entire lives we finally decided to sell it all, pack up our 3 kids and live in an RV on our 73 acres building our own off-grid house and learning to live a more self-reliant life.
Our house build is documented entirely on our main build channel "Wild Wonderful Off-Grid". We also share our live outside the build on our vlog channel "Wild Wonderful After Show" https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCljK0FmyKpsQ6h7Byg7KvbQ
